The Red Utopia association considers its political foundation to be the principle that the end does not justify the means, but that the means must reflect the essence of the end. It has no political program, just as the First International did not. Despite the diverse ideological backgrounds of its supporters, it believes that the anti-capitalism that spread after the start of the Russian Anti-Revolution (December 1917) was fundamentally motivated by pre-capitalist – that is, retrograde – ideas, and not by civilizational projects capable of overcoming capitalism and of further developing its democratic models. This also explains the prevalence, throughout the history of the so-called «left», of sympathies for dictatorial regimes of all kinds and colors. Red Utopia fights against the further spread of old and new pre-capitalist ideologies (in the political, cultural, ecological, religious, and other fields) as part of its battle to overcome capitalism, if life on Earth, including its humanity, is to be saved. In this sense, its utopia remains red.

L’esperienza dei sopravvissuti alla Shoah

Abstract.

RECOMPOSING THE BROKEN

by David Meghnagi

The experience of Holocaust survivors

Abstract. Having found oneself face to face with the unspeakable, having become its victim, is a unique psychological and moral experience, terribly difficult to process. Consequently, reintegration will prove more difficult (but also, perhaps, more richly meaningful) than for others who have been spared such an extreme experience, because the survivors will have to integrate into their personality one of the most atrocious experiences to which a human being can be subjected. In the dialogue between generations, mourning is an important moment of reconciliation and reconstruction. We can separate ourselves not only, as Freud notes, because we let the loved one die so that we may live, but also because, at other levels, we reconcile with the lost person, making them live again within us, projecting their memory into daily life and into the future of our children. By recovering the past, redeeming open wounds, we open a door to the future. All of this happens in normal mourning. But what happens when destruction strikes an entire population, in total isolation and extreme solitude? How can one avoid falling completely to pieces? From what must one draw to restore meaning to a shattered life? Meghnagi's paper aims to respond to these themes, bringing together psychology and the humanities, history, theology, and philosophy in a close dialogue with the works of some of the most authoritative scholars and writers of the twentieth century.

Let us try to imagine having none of our loved ones left. That overnight the entire population of our city vanishes into nothingness, that nine-tenths of the population of our country is violently annihilated. Let us try to imagine losing, from one moment to the next, our closest relatives, brothers and sisters, parents, grandparents and uncles, all friends near and far; having no one with whom to share the grief, far from home, expelled from work, hunted and alone with a nameless anguish, and that in the end there are not even cemeteries where we can mourn our kin.

Let us try to think of this and more, and we might perhaps partly understand what the Nazi genocide meant for those who suffered it, what a wound it represented in the consciousness of the survivors, what an internal drama it constituted for those who, having survived, carry the burden for those who are no longer there, consumed by nightmares and a lacerating sense of guilt, however infinitely irrational. Let us imagine that for the prolongation of our survival, by a few days or months, someone else died first, that through a selection someone else perished in the chambers prepared for the final destruction, that for every job useful to the enemy, as a chemist or scientist, another faceless man was prematurely added to the number of the dead and killed foreseen every day of every month.

Let us try to imagine this and more. Perhaps we could then understand what the return to life truly meant for those who experienced deportation and the camps. Perhaps then we would perceive in its intensity the violence of those who today would like to blame the victims for a past that does not pass, because they want to cultivate the memory of what was. We would no longer ask ourselves why those directly concerned by this immense tragedy do not forget. On the contrary, we would ask ourselves how they could continue to live, renewing trust in their neighbors, sharing hopes for a better future with those who pretended not to see or did not want to look. From where did they draw the vital sap to not succumb. How could they reacquire unwavering faith in humanity, and how did they preserve faith, even if it can no longer be the same, except at the price of a profound denial, emotional and intellectual isolation, and censures that do violence to the intellect and to faith in a just and good God. In religious terms, the true great miracle in recent Jewish history is to have continued to believe in God, despite Auschwitz and in response to Auschwitz.

For years I have long asked myself how Judaism managed to survive the immense catastrophe of Nazi extermination, from which emotional sources it drew the sap to return to life, what prevented the children of survivors from emptying every desire for life and joy. These questions are not without psychological significance and have broader implications for reflection on the processes of collective mourning.

The Survivor's Experience

The survivor's experience consists of distinct but related moments: the initial trauma with its disintegrating and devastating effects on the personality, and the consequences that last for the entire existence and require a unique investment of resources, if one does not wish to succumb. Being a survivor entails, as Bettelheim writes,

"a vague but very particular responsibility, due to the fact that what should have been our birthright—the right to live our lives in relative tranquility and security instead of being arbitrarily murdered by the State, whose duty it would be to protect it—is actually experienced as a stroke of undeserved and inexplicable luck. It is a miracle that I was saved when millions of people exactly like me perished; therefore, if it happened, it must be for some inscrutable purpose".

There is a voice, that of reason, which, to the question 'Why me?', tries to answer, 'It was pure and simple luck, chance; there is no other explanation'; but the voice of conscience retorts: 'True, but if you were able to survive, it was because some other prisoner died in your place.' And beneath this voice we hear another that whispers an even graver accusation: 'Some died because you took that less strenuous job from them; others because you didn't give them that piece of bread that you, perhaps, could have done without.' And there always remains the final accusation, for which no acceptable justification can be found: 'You were glad that it happened to someone else and not to you.'

The irrationality of these feelings of guilt and of the impression of being in some way morally indebted does not diminish their power to dominate all of life; in many ways it is precisely their irrationality that makes them so difficult to master. Feelings that rest on a rational basis can be dealt with by rational measures, but irrational feelings are for the most part unassailable by reason and must be tackled at a deeper emotional level1.

Faced with extreme situations, one can allow oneself to be destroyed by the experience, or repress it by denying that it could have any lasting consequence. But one can also struggle throughout one's existence to preserve awareness of it and integrate it into memory. The most destructive response is that reintegration of the personality is impossible, or useless, or both. In these cases, the survivor perceives their life as fragmented. Such a condition of fragmentation and emptiness is well represented in the novels of Isaac Bashevis Singer, who not by chance continued to write in Yiddish, as if the true recipients of the novels, the readers murdered by the millions, were still alive2. The survivor's world has shattered, and they no longer know how to make sense of it. The unconscious decision to be incapable of rebuilding one's life has as its background the perception that everything that belonged to the world of yesterday and gave meaning to existence has been forever lost without possibility of recovery; has forever disappeared. Others, the majority, resort to mechanisms of repression and denial in order to survive. Once out of a limit experience, they try to return to the life of before, as if nothing had happened. Since it was impossible to forget, the closest thing to denial was "not to allow that experience to modify their way of living or their personality. In truth, being able to return unchanged to life after liberation was the ardent desire of many prisoners; believing in this possibility made the degradation to which they had been subjected psychologically more bearable." 31

Recourse to these mechanisms is not an exclusive prerogative of the Shoah. It is a common reaction in the face of the tragedies of life and history: remembering the facts only as historical facts while denying or repressing their psychological import, since acknowledging it would require a restructuring of the personality and a modification of one's worldview. On the side of the civilizations guilty of the Shoah, one of the psychological springs of a certain historical revisionism can be identified here, which does not deny the existence of the camps or the extent of the tragedy, but pretends that everything is, or must be, as before, blaming the victims for not wanting to forget.

Survivors who deny how much "the concentration camp experience demolished their integration, who repress the sense of guilt and the feeling of having a special moral debt to discharge, often get along quite well in life, at least apparently. But on an emotional level they live as if emptied out because much of their energy is spent on maintaining denial and repression, and because they can no longer trust that their integration will offer them security, should it be put to the test, since once it failed in this task." 4 Their life is in reality built on a house of cards, founded on a fundamental insecurity, an existential anguish that consumes existence, in which little is enough to reactivate the feeling of precariousness...

Maintaining habits and rituals, continuing to live as if everything were normal, getting up in the morning, shaving as every day and going to work even if everything is now meaningless, can sometimes be the ultimate resource against despair and the temptation of suicide.

The preliminary condition for achieving a new integration is the recognition of the gravity and nature of the trauma suffered. Once this is done, it becomes easier to accept the most inner anxieties, to cope with persecutory feelings of guilt, to rebuild existence by finding meaning in it, to repair the internal and external world by working so that those events do not happen again.

Having found oneself face to face with the unspeakable, having become its victim, is a unique psychological and moral experience, terribly difficult to process. Consequently, reintegration "will prove more difficult (but also, perhaps, more richly meaningful) than for others who have been spared such an extreme experience, because the survivors will have to integrate into their personality one of the most atrocious experiences to which man can be subjected." 5

Faced with the loss of a loved one, in a first phase we live, act, and behave as if we ourselves belonged to the world of the dead; we are withdrawn into ourselves, we need to be alone or in the company of people to whom we are bound by deep affection, such as family members and close relatives. The rituals elaborated by every culture are rich in indications that allow us to signal this state of ours to others, to ask for and receive help. Among Jews, it is customary not to shave one's beard for an entire month if the loss involves parents, wife, or children. In the first week of mourning, one is also exempt from daily prayer. The only obligation is to recite the Kaddish, the prayer for the dead. 6 In a normal situation, after a certain period, life resumes its course. The person regains the energy to return to living. Precisely in a normal situation, and by normality I mean the protective presence of the family group and the wider circle of friends, relatives, and work colleagues.

In individual mourning, when the situation allows it, we revive within ourselves the people who are no longer here. The working through of mourning is possible not only because the Ego chooses to live and lets the loved one die, but also because, at other levels, the loved and lost person lives on in the memory we preserve of them, which constitutes a mainstay of our individual and collective identity.7This is generally what happens in normal mourning. When we cannot manage it, we accuse ourselves of imaginary or real faults, according to a logic typical of the primary process, amplifying them in our omnipotence; we become responsible for everything and must therefore atone until death. This is the case of melancholia. Or, to defend ourselves from such danger, we seek refuge in absolute denial, living a life that is not our own, wrapping in normality what is no longer, transferring onto the generations that follow the weight of unresolved conflicts and the oppressive burden of guilt. The life of those who come after becomes, in these painful cases, a continuous questioning of the Sphinx. Children are forced to become adults before their time, they must act as parents to their parents so as not to fall apart themselves.

In individual mourning, the function of mediation between the different psychic instances is performed by the Ego. It is the Ego that must come to terms with the unconscious burden of guilt and activate the mechanisms of defense and reworking. In collective processes, the action of the Ego intertwines with that of political, cultural, and social movements, and individual working through intertwines with the collective one.

The discourse changes when mourning strikes an entire community in an extreme way. With the direct support of the reference group lacking, the working through requires an additional effort, because one finds oneself even more alone. For those who cannot make it, life can drag on in an unbearable emptiness that can lead to suicide. To survive, one had to forget, not think about what had happened, avoid looking back at the past, preserve the apparent normality of gestures, continue living as if everything were as before, even though nothing could ever be as before.

For the young, it is easier; life is projected toward the future; the feeling of loss can be repressed, only to re-emerge many years later. For the elderly, it is more difficult, especially when the reasons for existence and the hope of a different world for their children are affected. Letting oneself die, or worse, committing suicide, is a very strong temptation; it can be an extreme way of manifesting the feeling of humiliation and offended dignity.

The path of individual mourning in these cases passes through the collective one; the former refers to the latter in an intertwining of unresolved questions that takes on the character of an obsession: "Why me and not others? How can we prevent all this from happening again?" Faced with an extreme mourning that involves the entire community, even the religious vision of the world appears deeply affected: "Why did God allow this? Where was God in the moment of extreme solitude?" Not everyone is able to answer that God was present with the suffering victims, in the silent scream of those who died alone and abandoned, in the desperate cry "I am the last!". This aspect has been the subject of different yet convergent meditations on the part of those who, like Levi, Bettelheim, Améry and Celan8, approached the problem from secular positions, and those who, like Jonas, Frankl, Wiesel, did so by re-examining the texts of tradition9.

If in the normal processes of working through mourning we resume living, reconciling with the lost person, in melancholia, as Freud emphasized, mourning becomes endless and casts its shadows over the entire future. This is the situation that risks being created when mourning invests an entire community, when violent destruction strikes an entire group. To emerge from it, one must give meaning to the future. But how, if the possibility of a future has been forever violently severed?

Denial, in the face of a great historical catastrophe, can choose two opposite paths: relativize and minimize, amplify other events correlated in order to empty the disruptive impact of the catastrophe on thought and theory, thereby leaving everything as before. Not being able to deny reality, one opts for interpretative denial. Proceeding along this path, one can even come to consider those who want to remember as guilty of a fault, making them responsible for the fact that the past does not pass, accusing them of having transformed the memory of the tragedy into a rent-seeking position.

What happens if even the ultimate defense against despair and nihilism fails, if everything takes the form of a great black hole to the point of making the very act of re-signifying blasphemous? In this light, one can understand the bewilderment, anger, and grief of a large portion of Israelis over the reckless statement made some years ago in a sermon by an authoritative Israeli rabbi. Referring to the Kabbalistic doctrine of the transmigration of souls, he said that the victims were the incarnation of "souls that have sinned" (neshamoth chatoth) in past generations and had returned to life to purify themselves and hasten human and divine redemption..

To cope with the collapse of an entire world after the expulsion from Spain, the Kabbalah subjected the biblical text and oral tradition to a strong revision, deriving from the Scriptures new meanings capable of giving a sense to the tragedy of the expulsions. The laceration of the body of Israel, its pain, fragmentation, and dispersion were the symbols of a process that took place in the world of the Pleroma. In this vision, the suffering of Israel, the aspirations and dreams of redemption were part of a cosmic suffering that involved, beyond the entire animal and vegetable world, the Shekhinah, the divine womb, the mother-being of every creature. The Jew locked in the ghetto and fleeing the Inquisition, and with him every other, had to fulfill the function of liberating the divine sparks trapped in the cosmos after the breaking of the divine Vessels.10

A theory that does not know mourning becomes saturated and unusable. Mourning concerns people and society, but in certain respects also theories that are influenced by the processes of working through, as well as the ritualization and re-elaboration of memory. The discussion about the past is also the mask with which one looks at the present and plans the future. Memory thus becomes the battleground that includes the ability to make use of experience, the idea we have of society, and the future we want to give ourselves. The latter is always the result of how we look at the past, projecting it into aspirations and dreams.

The relationship of individuals and the group with their respective theories and beliefs obeys the same mechanisms that govern those between people and institutions. In the "communal" type of bond, the group and its representations can be apparently accepted and recognized in their authority, leaving everything unchanged. It is as if the encounter between two people had never really taken place. Each remains as they were before. The individual accepts the beliefs of the group that recognizes a role for them without anything ever actually happening that enlivens either one or the other. To put it with Bion, it is a type of relationship that produces neither hatred, nor love, knowledge, or change. In the "parasitic" bond, on the other hand, the group and its representations are emptied of all value even when they are apparently assumed. Hatred and envy dominate. In the "symbiotic" one, the group and its representations are taken seriously, subjected to verification processes that produce hatred, love, and knowledge.11

What happens, then, if mourning involves the entire community to which one belongs, the family, the more distant and closer relatives, the country, the village, or the city in which one lives? What effects does it produce on the representation of the world? How does it influence the previous vision of life and things? How is mourning worked through in these cases? What mechanisms must the group, or what remains of it, resort to in order not to become prey to endless mourning? From what sources must one draw so that an entire civilization does not fall completely to pieces?

I have tried to answer these questions by addressing concrete situations, reconstructing specific paths, avoiding undue generalizations, and I have chosen four paradigmatic figures of our time's culture who have played a role in the political and cultural debate: Marek Edelman, Primo Levi, Isaac Deutscher, and Gershom Scholem12. The mourning memory of these four authors truly engages with the problems from different angles and with different perspectives.

Marek Edelman was deputy commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, leader of the Bund, the Jewish workers' movement that fought for cultural autonomy, and as such a representative figure of a political organization that played a leading role in the development of the Jewish emancipation movement. Rereading three of his important writings, I tried to investigate the path of mourning and its consequences on theory. The first text dates from immediately after the Second World War. It is a political document, in which the author speaks on behalf of a movement that has been annihilated and tells the story of a people that has been exterminated. The backdrop is Poland, which is about to fall into the hands of the communist dictatorship. Edelman chooses to stay, even though he is well aware of what his country's fate will be. Refusing to adapt to the new climate, he lives isolated, on the margins of society. His is the image of a guardian. Guardian of an idea that has been defeated, of graves that do not exist. For twenty years Edelman is silent and sublimates anguish by practicing medicine. He invents a blood transfusion technique, highly appreciated, but he does not pursue a career because he does not want to compromise himself with the new regime.

The next text is the interview conducted in 1977 by Hanna Krall, a survivor of the second generation, and represents a bridge between two generations. Finally, the writing in which he retraces the same topics twenty years later. Primo Levi was a secular Jew from Turin, who worked as a chemist and wrote in his spare time. Through his work, I questioned the relationship between writing, literature, and testimony. The question about the links between mourning and theory concerns in this case the role of testimony and its connections with literature. I asked myself: "Can literature become testimony? Can testimony become literature?" In Levi's case, the role of witness overshadowed the writer for a long time. Some saw in The Truce the beginnings of Levi as a writer. Others preferred to wait for his novels of invention before speaking of literature. In reality, Levi was a writer, in the highest sense of the term, already with his first book: If This Is a Man. The secret of his success as a witness lies precisely in the fact that he was a great writer who had elaborated a model of text construction suited to the subject. Writing, testimony, and representation of the world are in Levi inseparable elements of a process in which personal mourning and collective mourning become mourning of writing.

Levi never adapted to becoming a writer like the others; even when fortune smiled on him, he stayed away from the limelight. With discretion and a sense of modesty, he opposed to the authors of his generation an irreducible diversity that derived from his condition as a witness. Literature, or rather, men of letters, took revenge by relegating him to the role of witness and putting the role of writer in the background. In this way, one could avoid addressing the question he posed: "How to do literature after Auschwitz?"

Deutscher's story is well encapsulated in a Talmudic adage he used in a meeting with Jewish youth. Rabbi Meir, an important figure in the Talmud, did not break off relations with Elisha ben Abuya, even though the latter had abandoned faith and all religious practice. The heretic, writes Deutscher, was riding a donkey. Out of respect for the sanctity of the Sabbath, his friend walked on foot. The depth of the discussion was such that Meir did not realize he had reached the boundary beyond which, according to rabbinical norms, it is forbidden for a Jew to venture on the Sabbath. The master turned to the disciple, telling him that the boundary had been reached and that they must part: "Do not accompany me further."

On this interesting dialogue, Deutscher intended to write a theatrical composition that, however, remained at the first act. Elisha was for Deutscher the prototype of a new figure of contemporary Judaism, placed on the borders of different worlds: the "prototype" of "great revolutionaries of thought," of "non-Jewish" Jews, with whom he identified. In its one-sidedness, Deutscher's interpretation left the most important question unanswered. What would remain of Meir and his world? Was it to "disappear" as a distinct group with its own culture, in the name of an abstract universalism that blamed them and that would never have been required of other human groups? Or, on the contrary, was it to live and develop its own culture in open dialogue with the outside world? And how would all this have been possible in a reality in which the Jewish people had been condemned to violent extinction? Prisoner of his political culture, Deutscher failed to give a positive answer to the problem of Jewish identity and the reconstruction of a violently extinct world. In Scholem's case, we are faced with the opposite solution. Scholem's story is that of a German Jew in conflict with the myth of German-Jewish symbiosis who becomes a Zionist. His brother, who had introduced him to Zionism, became a communist leader. Both broke with their father. In order not to participate in the great carnage of the war, Scholem managed to pass himself off as schizophrenic. In 1923, he moved to Jerusalem, contributing with his imposing work to rediscovering the history of Jewish mysticism. His correspondence with Walter Benjamin, of whom he was a great friend, is one of the greatest cultural testimonies of the twentieth century. Scholem's brother died in Terezín. His friend Benjamin committed suicide on the Spanish border to avoid falling into Nazi hands. He had with him the theses on history, a short and grandiose work that anticipated by a few decades the collective awareness, from progressive positions, of the limits of the idea of "progress."

In the intertwined dialogue among the four chosen authors, Deutscher seemed to me to represent the figure of the heretic for history. In approaching Deutscher's complex personality, I went back in time to trace a sort of personal myth that runs through three generations: that of the great-grandfather, whose name Isaac bore, of the grandfather, and of the father.

Without wishing to arbitrarily enclose the chosen authors in a single and unique figure, I have tried to glimpse in the folds the echoes of questions that run through generations. Despite the differences noted, they have something in common: they are able to speak to each other across distances, even though they belong to different political and cultural universes.

Die Erfahrung der Überlebenden der Shoah

Abstract. All dies geschieht in der normalen Trauer.

Jahrhunderts. Scholems Bruder starb in Theresienstadt.
