The Red Utopia association considers its political foundation to be the principle that the end does not justify the means, but that the means must reflect the essence of the end. It has no political program, just as the First International did not. Despite the diverse ideological backgrounds of its supporters, it believes that the anti-capitalism that spread after the start of the Russian Anti-Revolution (December 1917) was fundamentally motivated by pre-capitalist – that is, retrograde – ideas, and not by civilizational projects capable of overcoming capitalism and of further developing its democratic models. This also explains the prevalence, throughout the history of the so-called «left», of sympathies for dictatorial regimes of all kinds and colors. Red Utopia fights against the further spread of old and new pre-capitalist ideologies (in the political, cultural, ecological, religious, and other fields) as part of its battle to overcome capitalism, if life on Earth, including its humanity, is to be saved. In this sense, its utopia remains red.

«BERGOGLIOMANIA» E CRISE

(r.m.)

After the publication of my article on "Pope Francis: Expert in Genocides," I received numerous comments—far more than usual, proving how controversial this subject is. However, the most appreciated came from my dear friend and comrade Osvaldo Coggiola (author of the book I published on Trotskyism in Latin America), who, although an Argentine who lived for many years in Italy, has definitively become Brazilian. Osvaldo sent me the long article he wrote in Portuguese, published by *Boitempo Editorial* and in Italian by the magazine La Contraddizione in November 2013. Since he is happy for the section on Bergoglio to be revisited in Utopia Rossa, I have extracted it, and I am equally pleased to enable a deeper exploration of the relationship of complicity Bergoglio had with the generational genocide that took place in Argentina.

PAPA FRANCESCO: UN ESPERTO IN GENOCIDI

di Roberto Massari

BILINGUE: ITALIANO - ENGLISH

HITLERO-COMMUNIST ROOTS OF TODAY’S «LEFT-WING» ANTISEMITISM

by Roberto Massari

The first Hitlero-communism

By «Hitlero-communism» one should mean the political thought that emerged in the summer/fall of 1939 when the Nazi and Soviet totalitarian regimes allied to invade Poland and annex various countries in Eastern Europe, thereby triggering the Second World War. The followers of Hitlero-communism (in Russia and worldwide) then endorsed all subsequent Russian invasions (Baltic countries, Finland, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, etc.) up to the current one in Ukraine. At the core of Hitlero-communism, both old and new, lies the pre-modern (if not medieval) idea that Russia was and still is legitimized in carrying out such annexations because it exercises a historical right by reclaiming territories that belonged to the Tsarist Empire. This position - reactionary in the fullest sense of the term - is found expressed more or less unconsciously in current justifications for Putin’s aggression in Ukraine and will likely apply to any potential future aggressions (starting with the Baltic countries).

The Soviet alliance with Nazism lasted from August 1939 to June 1941, the nearly two years during which the project of anti-Jewish extermination took definite shape, initiated even before the Pact and culminating in the so-called «Final Solution», systematized in the Wannsee Conference of January 1942. One of the «necessities» addressed by this extreme choice of Nazism was that about 1.7 million Jews lived in the part of Poland assigned to the Third Reich by the Pact with Stalin: a Jewish population that Nazism intended to annihilate, following plans and guidelines implemented long before, well-known to Stalin and the Soviet leadership.

To establish some dates: the first Auschwitz Konzentrationslager became operational in June 1940, in the midst of collaboration between Nazis and Soviets; the one in Chełmno (considered the first extermination camp) in December 1941, six months after the Nazi breach of the Pact. These and other Polish extermination camps (like Treblinka, Sobibór, Bełżec) began to operate «late» (in 1942, «Aktion Reinhard») because their planning became possible only after the joint invasion of Poland in September 1939. However, their construction took place during the almost two years of alliance with the Ussr: indeed, that alliance made them possible. It would be a serious error in historical perspective to date the beginning of the Holocaust from there because anti-Jewish persecutions had begun in Germany in the 1930s; for example, the Buchenwald camp, located in the German Thuringia, was operational from July 1937.

PIUS XI AND PIUS XII BETWEEN OPPORTUNISM AND COLLABORATION WITH HITLER AND MUSSOLINI

Antijudaismus versus Antisemitismus?

Part 2. BILINGUE: ENGLISH - DEUTSCH

by Peter Gorenflos(Berlin)

In March 2020, the Vatican secret archives on Pacelli's pontificate were opened. Pulitzer Prize winner David Kertzer, whose new work The Pope at War has just been published in Germany, made some spectacular discoveries that further deepen the insight into Pacelli's politics. Immediately after his enthronement, the Nazi prince and close confidante of the Führer, Philipp von Hessen, was asked by Hitler to enter into secret negotiations with the Holy See in order to improve the difficult relationship between the Vatican and the Reich. The Nazi prince was great-grandson of Queen Victoria, nephew of Wilhelm II and son-in-law of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy.
The face-to-face meetings that then took place were so secret that not even the German Embassy at the Holy See found out about them, and they were suppressed in the twelve-volume documentation on Vatican activities in World War II published by Jesuits between 1965 and 1981. In short, it was what Pacelli called a truce. He complained about the closure of Catholic schools, books critical of the Church and cuts in state funds in Austria. The Nazi prince asked if the Pope was prepared to stay out of German politics. He also mentioned the sexual misconduct of priests, including child abuse. Pacelli said that if such cases were reported, "We would take immediate action." Indeed, while Cardinal Secretary of State, he ordered the destruction of archival material on cases of immorality among monks and priests in Austria to prevent prosecution.

The strictly confidential contact between Hitler and the Holy Father through the middleman showed results. The anti-clerical Foreign Minister Ribbentrop now also supported an agreement, the German press was ordered to cease its attacks and Hitler demanded information on the state of the church in order to negotiate with the Vatican about its concerns. In another secret conversation, Hitler let it be known that the “racial question”, his greatest concern, could be avoided if the new Pope did not comment on it.

ANTI-JUDAISM VERSUS ANTI-SEMITISM?

by Peter Gorenflos (Berlin)

BILINGUE: ENGLISH - DEUTSCH

Pius XI. and Pius XII, between opportunism and collaboration with Hitler and Mussolini

Part 1

Before the Second World War, the Jewish population in Italy was about one per thousand, in Germany one percent and in Catholic Poland about ten percent. In Polish cities they were often the majority, and Warsaw alone had around 350,000 Jewish residents. Father Jósef Kruszyński, a prominent Catholic priest, said in 1923: "If the world is to be rid of the Jewish plague, it is necessary to eradicate it to the last link". That was the opinion of many of his fellow priests who were convinced of the existence of a Jewish world conspiracy. Two years later he became President of the Catholic University of Lublin. Towards the end of World War I, the Archbishop of Warsaw asked Pope Benedict XV to send an emissary to Poland to investigate the country's religious, social and political situation. His choice fell on Achille Ratti, who then in 1922 succeeded the pontificate as Pius XI. Ratti spoke extremely disparagingly about the Jews to his client in Rome, and when there were numerous pogroms, he said in his report: "One of the worst and strongest forces that one encounters here, perhaps the strongest and worst of all, are the Jews and on January 15, 1919 he wrote of the situation in Warsaw: ‘The Jews there are immensely numerous and could not be more despised, but they are not molested and much less persecuted’. The mission's final report, written by his esteemed secretary, Monsignor Pellegrinetti, was rife with anti-Semitic clichés, ranging from alleged racial characteristics (big nose, protruding ears, etc.) to other prejudices, declaring the Jews both capitalists, which unfortunately held a large part of Polish prosperity, as well as the main forces of Bolshevism. When Ratti was proclaimed pope by the conclave in February 1922, Pope Pius XI, he rewarded his then secretary with a nunciature in Serbia and an archdiocese.

A PARIAH PEOPLE: A PLEA FOR HYAM MACCOBY AND HIS CRITICISM OF ANTI-SEMITISM, by Peter Gorenflos (in cooperation with Emanuel Rund)

IN DUE LINGUE (Inglese, Tedesco)
IN TWO LANGUAGES (English, German)

Barnes & Noble, 1998
The Disputation

Hyam Maccoby (1924–2004) became known to a wider audience in the US and the UK above all through his play The Disputation. This is about one of the publicly led disputations that took place in the Middle Ages between a rabbi and a Catholic priest with the purpose of moving the Jewish people to convert to Christianity. In the historically proven disputation of 1263 in Barcelona between Rabbi Moses ben Nahman and Catholic priest Pablo Christiani, which took place under the liberal regency of King James of Aragon, the Christian had no chance against the rabbi’s logically stringent line of argument. After this, the Dominicans propagated a distortion of what really happened and thereby forced Moses ben Nahman to reply. Despite promises to the contrary, he then, under pressure from the Pope, had to go into exile. Other, similar disputations often ended with a bloodbath carried out against the Jews and public burnings of the Talmud. The Inquisition was at the ready, supported by the Pope, who would soon gain considerable political influence. The play, directed by Bob Kalfin and starring well-known actor Theodore Bikel as the rabbi, was a great success and was subsequently adapted as a film by the BBC, with Christopher Lee as King James.
Only on the predominantly Catholic European mainland, the “continent”, is the ancient history expert, Talmud philologist and former librarian at the Leo Baeck College in London, Hyam Maccoby, almost unknown. His most recent position was a professorship Jewish Studies at the University of Leeds.

The Mythmaker

His central work, The Mythmaker (1986), did not appear in Germany until 20 years later. As a historian of the school called “the Jewish view of Jesus”, he documents and substantiates the proof, hardly new, that Jesus could not have been the founder of Christianity but was firmly anchored in Jewish society, which regarded the Torah and took on a leading role in the Pharisee movement. He had the Messianic aim of re-establishing the Jewish monarchy, freeing his land from the yoke of Roman occupation and then doing away with all military rule worldwide. This claim to be the King of the Jews – an open provocation to the Roman occupiers – landed him in prison and after sentencing by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate on the cross, where he and numerous other Jewish freedom fighters died a martyr’s death. Had he simply been one of the many unsuccessful aspiring Messiahs, he would soon have been forgotten, if it had not been for his direct adherents, the Nazarenes, who believed in his resurrection by means of a divine miracle and began to establish themselves as a Jewish sect within the Pharisee movement, led by their Jewish leaders Peter and James. Here, Maccoby develops the whole panorama of a society under the rule of the world power of Rome, he shows the various groups, the compromising sect of the Sadducees, one of whom was the high priest who acted as a chief of police for Rome, the Herodians as Quisling and titular kings, the militant Zealots and above all the Pharisees, well regarded among the people, who were the real leaders of the oppressed Jewish majority and guaranteed the spiritual survival of the Jews after the destruction of the Temple.

YESHAYAHU A. JELINEK (1933–2016) – IN MEMORIAM, by Alexander Korb

We are pleased to publish this obituary sent to us by Alexander Korb (Associate Professor in Modern European History, University of Leicester) and which will be published in the journal Yad Vashem Studies.
To the memory of Yeshayahu Andrej “Andy” Jelinek is dedicated the latest book published by Massari editore, Vaticano, Olocausto e fascismi (edited by Daniele Barbieri and Peter Gorenflos), mentioned by Korb at the end of this article. [Red Utopia]

On December 21, 2016, Yeshayahu Andrej “Andy” Jelinek passed away. He was one of the finest scholars of Central Eastern Europe, with a focus on autochthonous fascism, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, the Catholic Church, inter-ethnic relations and the tensions and overlaps between nationalism and communism. He has published several books and articles in five languages (if not more), always eager to engage with the most recent scholarship in his field and to apply comparative methods.
The last time I visited Andy Jelinek at his home in Beer-Sheva was in May 2016. For the trip, I was supposed to borrow the car of a Holocaust survivor who had promised to stop driving that year. Shortly before my planned departure, I got a call that the car insurance had expired. Instead, I took the train from Jerusalem to Beer-Sheva. It was Friday, so I was well aware that I had only a limited amount of time in order to catch the last train back before Shabbat would start. Yet, I got the math wrong. When I got to Beer-Sheva, I had less than two hours to see Andy. I had brought my bicycle on the train, so I rushed to Andy’s house, right at the edge of the desert, in a street called Iris of the Negev. He was frail but sharp as ever, and it characterizes his fresh mind how admirably and humorously he dealt with the young scholar storming his house on a Friday afternoon. I spoke to him my native language, Czech, and our Czechoslovak mixture of languages would always cheer him up.
Weeks before, I had mailed him a book on the historiography of the Holocaust in Yugoslavia (I had checked it out from the Yad Vashem Library and I now urgently needed to bring it back). It was not easy to get the book back from him; in fact, he hid it from me. He still was not finished with some sections, and he was curious to learn everything about the recent scholarship. The episode reveals another aspect, too. The book praises Jelinek’s academic contributions, so the book embodied recognition for his scholarship more generally. We all are eager to receive such recognition, but in his case he seemed to find that recognition rather internationally than in his own country.
Jelinek was born on July 16, 1933 in a Slovak small town, Prievidza. During the years of the independent Hlinka State, a Nazi ally since 1939, the family survived the first rounds of deportations to Auschwitz. Slovakia was the first independent state to deport their Jewish citizens to death camps, but stopped deporting towards the end of 1942. During the Slovak national uprising in August 1944, Prievidza was free for more than a month. Once the uprising collapsed, Andy, together with his older brother Erik and his mother Regina, fled to the forest where they survived the German onslaught. His father Vojtěch fought with the Slovak partisans and survived as well, whereas Andy’s grandparents were amongst to last Slovakian Jews to be deported to Auschwitz and murdered after the Germans resumed the deportations in 1944. After liberation, the family reunited in Prievidza. In 1949, Andy and Erik embarked for the kibbutz Ma’anit with Hashomer Hatzair. They served their country as kibbutzniks and soldiers for more than four years. In 1977, Jelinek married his wife Mirjam and settled in Beer-Sheva, where Andy taught at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. They got three children – their son Ori tragically drowned in the Ganges in 2002 during a journey to India. Andy made many donations in the memory of Ori Jelinek.
