Lettera ai giovani militanti proPal che non vorrebbero essere i nuovi antisemiti/antiebrei
Ignoti e giovani proPal, vi scrivo questa lettera senza sapere se mai arriverà a voi o a qualcuno della vostra generazione.
So bene che il principio di condotta dominante tra voi nativi digitali è che «l’importante non è aver ragione, ma non farsi convincere». So però altrettanto bene che siete privi di difese intellettuali, disarmati di fronte alle mode indotte dai social e quindi pronti a farvi convincere dalle tante fake-news in circolazione, purché abbiano un carattere di massa, sia pure solo virtuale. Eppure, se anche un solo giovane o una sola giovane nel mondo troverà in questo mio Promemoria lo stimolo a rivedere le proprie posizioni antiebraiche e a orientare quindi diversamente la propria vita futura, morale e intellettuale, sarà valsa per me la pena di avervi dedicato una parte del mio tempo. Ciò non sarà sufficiente a includermi nel numero dei Giusti fra le nazioni, ma rafforzerà la mia fiducia nel fatto che con argomenti razionali e i dovuti riferimenti storici è ancora possibile convincere dei giovani sinceri.
Ho deciso di scrivervi perché - dopo la passione con cui, in Italia e in altre parti del mondo occidentale, siete scesi nelle strade a manifestare contro Israele, in preda alla commozione per le stragi del popolo gazawi - non ho visto niente di simile per le recenti stragi dei cittadini iraniani. Eppure si è trattato di uno dei più grandi crimini contro l’umanità dell’èra moderna, del quale vi siete trovati ad essere contemporanei: un governo teocratico e animato da fanatismo religioso che ha sparato a mitraglia, uccidendo migliaia e migliaia di manifestanti, per lo più giovani, disposti a morire per la democrazia e il progresso.
Forse ha pesato anche il fatto che chi vi aveva mobilitato contro Israele si è ben guardato dal dirvi che molte di queste giovani vittime appartenevano a formazioni di sinistra come i Mujaheddin del Popolo, i Fedai (Fedayin) del Popolo, il Partito Tudeh (comunisti, clandestini dal 1988, ma non dal 1979), altre associazioni laiche e democratiche. Insomma: progresso contro barbarie. E anche per questo Trump non è intervenuto in aiuto.
Nessuna commozione da parte vostra, nemmeno un senso di solidarietà generazionale, visto che di comune amore per la democrazia sarebbe difficile parlare, dopo il sostegno morale che avete dato alle aggressioni antiebraiche di altri fanatismi religiosi come Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthi e lo stesso Iran.
Per motivi religiosi, questa mia lettera difficilmente sarà utile a quelli tra voi che sono musulmani, giovani, ma pur sempre cresciuti nel rispetto della teologia coranica. Col tempo questa è divenuta unilateralmente antiebraica, a differenza del Corano che in parte elogiava esageratamente gli ebrei e in parte li condannava, prevedendo una loro punizione nel fuoco della Geenna: ma non nel secolo XXI, bensì alla Fine dei tempi.
E invece tu, giovane musulmano, in teoria sei cresciuto recitando quotidianamente o ritualmente il versetto conclusivo (7°) della prima Sura coranica (al-Fātiḥa, l’Aprente). Si tratta di un’imprecazione rivolta ad Allah contro «quelli che sono nella [Tua] collera, quelli che si sviano». Per te, giovane musulmano, il versetto è quasi incomprensibile, ma per l’interpretazione islamica tradizionale i primi sarebbero gli ebrei e i secondi i cristiani. E il guaio è che non può essere altrimenti, viste le spiegazioni fornite nella 2ª Sura (al-Baqara), prima e dopo il versetto 142.
Per motivi molto più complicati da spiegare (ma qualcuno di voi potrà anche frugare in miei precedenti libri per trovare i riferimenti necessari), questa lettera non è rivolta a chi l’antisemitismo (che io preferisco chiamare antiebraismo) lo pratica da prima della guerra di Gaza: cristiani e cattolici da quasi duemila anni, integralisti islamici da vari secoli, nazifascisti vari da circa un secolo (inclusi ex ustascia croati, croci frecciate ungheresi, guardie hlinka slovacche ecc.), negazionisti, stalinisti, correnti slavofile e fondamentalisti di vario genere.
Non è rivolta nemmeno a chi vi ha accompagnato fisicamente o moralmente nelle vostre manifestazioni antisraeliane (spesso addirittura convocandole e dirigendole), appartenendo a gruppi settari e fortemente ideologizzati, di provenienza hitlero-comunistoide, trotskoide, anarcoide, ecologista apocalittica, wokista, antieuropeista e antioccidentalista in genere.
A differenza di voi, che vi siete mobilitati spinti dalla commozione per i civili di Gaza, i membri di queste sètte - in grado a volte di arrivare alle dimensioni di gruppo politico - non sono recuperabili a un discorso razionale e civile. Le loro presunte certezze ideologiche mascherano la profonda insicurezza caratteriale dei loro membri, che li spinge a cercare figure paterne protettive e possibilità di autoesaltare il proprio narcisistico Ego nei ristretti circoli di appartenenza. Nelle manifestazioni antisraeliane, la loro instabilità psicologica ha trovato l’occasione preziosa per sfogare il sottofondo sadomasochistico che sta alla base del razzismo in genere, ma dell’antiebraismo in modo particolare.
Spero che non sia il vostro caso o almeno non lo sia in forma cronica, inguaribile. Vi invito quindi a superare lo stato di giovanile inconscienza, finché siete in tempo, sperando anche che abbiate occasione di leggere questa mia lettera.
Non mi metto qui a ricostruire tutto il discorso sulla nascita dello Stato d’Israele, delle aggressioni continue ed extrapalestinesi dal 1948 in poi, l’inconsistenza della teoria dei Due Stati, l’invenzione sovietica del nazionalismo palestinese, lo spudorato antiebraismo di chi si è inventato e poi ha propagandato la nuova «accusa di sangue», cioè il «genocidio, e tutto il resto.
Volendo approfondire, troverete tutto ciò esteso e documentato in un mio recente libro (Deliri del nuovo antiebraismo. Accuse di sangue, mode e disinformazione) oltre che in più recenti articoli in Utopia rossa. Qui richiamerò schematicamente solo alcuni punti significativi, ipotizzando che voi li ignoriate. Ciò non sarà vero per tutti voi e non sarà vero per tutti i punti del Promemoria; ma forse, anche chi già li conosce trarrà giovamento dal richiamarli alla mente nel giorno della Memoria.
PROMEMORIA
1. Il Terzo Reich prese ufficialmente il potere il 30 gennaio 1933. Il primo Stato estero a riconoscerlo fu il Vaticano e, nonostante il suo programma esplicitamente antiebraico, il 20 luglio 1933, il segretario di Stato Eugenio Pacelli (futuro Pio XII) si precipitò a redigere e firmare, per conto di Pio XI, il Reichskonkordat - il Concordato, col nazismo - sul modello di quello elaborato col fascismo italiano da Francesco Pacelli (fratello di Eugenio). Si ignora in genere che quel Konkordat è ancora in vigore.
2. Pio XII - papa cresciuto politicamente e culturalmente insieme al nazismo tedesco - non ha mai usato in istanze pubbliche il termine «ebrei» e meno che mai «antisemitismo». La leggenda del suo interessamento per salvare la vita ad alcuni ebrei italiani è stata costruita su una grossolana falsificazione (per es. da Andrea Riccardi fondatore della Comunità di Sant’Egidio). La verità è che il Vaticano si interessò sempre e soltanto degli ebrei convertiti o coniugi in matrimoni misti. Ma anche a questo riguardo si ignora che non venne mai usata la formula «ebrei convertiti», bensì la formula razzista di «cattolici ariani». Ne è strapiena la documentazione, compresa quella resa accessibile in tempi recenti, dopo tanti anni di segretezza.
3. Ottimo che il Concilio Vaticano II abbia abolito nel 1965 l’accusa di «deicidio» per il popolo ebraico. Ma ciò significa che per ben vent’anni dopo la liberazione di Auschwitz, il Vaticano ha continuato a tenere in vita l’accusa dalla quale l’antiebraismo aveva preso il via orginariamente circa due millenni prima, e questo nonostante Auschwitz. Del resto Pio XII (†1958) non ha mai condannato l’Olocausto, nemmeno a guerra finita, dando prova di avere una sorta di blocco psicologico anche solo a pronunciare in pubblico la parola «ebrei».
Le tracce lasciate nel mondo cattolico da quasi duemila anni di antiebraismo non sono scomparse del tutto e riaffiorano periodicamente, sia nei più recenti libri giustificativi dell’antisemitismo di Pio XII, sia in gravi dichiarazioni, come quella di papa Francesco sul possibile genocidio in corso a Gaza.
4. La prima metà del Novecento vide la costruzione e diffusione di lager sia in Urss (Gulag) sia nella Germania nazista. I primi Konzentrationslager nacquero subito dopo la presa del potere o comunque negli anni ‘30 e rimasero attivi con durate diverse. All’inizio non furono utilizzati per gli ebrei o almeno non solo per gli ebrei: Breitenau, Buchenwald, Dachau, Flosssenburg, Neuengamme, Oranienburg, Osthofen, Sachsenhausen... Nomi che evocano grandi tragedie umane, ma che non commossero minimamente Stalin e la direzione sovietica quando decisero di allearsi con Hitler, nell’agosto 1939. Il Patto Molotov-Ribbentrop - che i giovani dovrebbero cominciare a considerare il vero spartiacque della storia moderna - fu siglato mentre la persecuzione degli ebrei tedeschi aveva già preso dimensioni di massa.
Ma senza quell’alleanza, senza la comune decisione nazisovietica di spartirsi la Polonia, non sarebbero morti quasi 3 milioni di ebrei polacchi, sterminati per lo più tramite fucilazioni di massa e solo in parte nei lager. In realtà non sarebbe scoppiata nemmeno la Seconda guerra mondiale: ma questo è un altro discorso su cui esistono ottimi libri di valenti storici e storiche (Claudia Weber forse il migliore e buono per cominciare).
5. L’alleanza fra Hitler e Stalin durò dall’agosto 1939 al 22 giugno 1941 (aggressione nazista nota come «Operazione Barbarossa»). In quei 22 mesi prese il via il piano di sterminio antiebraico - la cosiddetta «Soluzione finale» - che fu però formalizzata (cioè resa ufficiale) nella conferenza di Wannsee nel gennaio 1942. I lager di sterminio che furono creati in Polonia e altrove nel periodo di alleanza nazisovietica hanno i nomi tristemente celebri di Auschwitz e Mauthausen.
Altri campi di sterminio, la cui costruzione era cominciata durante l’alleanza con l’Urss, ma furono terminati poco dopo l’aggressione, hanno nomi altrettanto tristemente celebri come Bełżec, Chełmno, Leopoli (L’viv), Majdanek, Malyj Trostenets, Sobibór, Treblinka. Ragion per cui, quando i giovani sono invitati a manifestare contro Israele da parte di organizzazioni che io definisco «hitlerocomuniste» - perché non hanno mai rinnegato quell’alleanza che tanti milioni di morti provocò al popolo ebraico e al mondo - dovrebbero chiedersi con quale diritto morale o storico o politico lo facciano.
6. È storia nota che Stalin prese delle violente misure antiebraiche (e non solo antisioniste) negli ultimi anni della sua vita. Meno noto è invece che dopo la fine della guerra, dei circa 2,5 milioni di ebrei sovietici morti durante il conflitto, si decise ufficialmente di non parlare di loro in quanto ebrei, ma di includerli nel numero più generale dei cittadini sovietici morti in guerra. Fu bloccata nel 1947 la pubblicazione del Libro nero (in cui si documentavano le cifre dello sterminio ebraico nei territori sovietici e che apparirà solo nel 1993) e furono smantellati il Comitato antifascista ebraico (Eak, che tanto aveva aiutato nella lotta antinazista), i centri di cultura ed editoria ebraica.
La Shoah fu eliminata dalla cultura e dalla letteratura sovietica e i dirigenti dell’Eak furono arrestati, torturati e poi eliminati tra il 1948 e il 1952. 15 imputati e 13 condanne a morte. Fu condannata al carcere e non uccisa solo una delle tre donne processate (Lina Štern) e fu trattato a parte il caso di Solomon Bregman, colpito da collasso e morto in prigione nel gennaio 1953. Nomi come Solomon Michoėls, Solomon Lozovskij, Isaak Fefer, Boris Šimeliovič, Perets Markiš, Venjamin Zuskin, Il’ja Vatenberg, Emilija Teumin, Čajka Vatenberg-Ostrovskaja e vari altri, dovrebbero essere ricordati ai dirigenti delle organizzazioni un tempo prosovietiche e oggi filoputiniane, quando invitano a manifestare contro Israele. La storia dell’antiebraismo «di sinistra» non inizia oggi e ha un lugubre passato alle spalle. (Per approfondire: Antonella Salomoni, L’Unione Sovietica e la Shoah, il Mulino 2007).
7. Quando il 29 novembre 1947 fu approvata la Risoluzione n. 181 - per rendere possibile la creazione di tre entità politiche (Israele, Stato arabo palestinese e città di Gerusalemme) - il voto fu a grande maggioranza: 33 a favore (inclusa l’Urss, i suoi paesi satelliti e quasi tutta l’America latina), 10 astensioni e 13 contro (tutti paesi islamici, tranne Cuba, Grecia e il caso particolare dell’India).
Ebbene, fin dagli inizi della guerra di Gaza sono emersi vari cattivi maestri che hanno voluto far credere ai giovani che quella decisione fu fondata su un riconoscimento di una presunta continuità israelitica con la Bibbia. Spiegazione ridicola, perché si dovrebbe immaginare i capi dei principali paesi capitalistici, imperialistici o sovietici che, riuniti in solenne assemblea a New York, si commuovono pensando ai racconti dell’Antico Testamento. A tale scopo è stato citato, in polemica ma senza basi reali, il libro di Shlomo Sand (L’invenzione del popolo ebraico, 2009) di cui si cita il titolo ma si ignora il contenuto. Ho avuto occasione di dire, infatti, che il libro si sarebbe dovuto intitolare «L’invenzione della razza ebraica» (che effettivamente non è mai esistita), mentre rappresenta una delle più complete ricostruzioni dell’esistenza storica di un vero e proprio popolo ebraico, anche se in certe epoche dislocato tra Nordafrica, Spagna, Caucaso, Impero zarista ecc. Ma proprio per questa dispersione, ancor più degno d’indagine e considerazione.
È ovvio che i cattivi maestri, nel ridicolizzare la decisione Onu del 1947, sono animati da spirito e odio antiebraco. Ragion di più per prenderne le distanze e leggersi quello e altri libri.
8. Israele accettò e continuò ad accettare a lungo la parte di Risoluzione che prevedeva la nascita anche di uno Stato palestinese, mentre gli Stati arabi e islamici la rifiutarono. Il povero popolo arabo palestinese (cioè gli abitanti della Palestina sotto Mandato britannico, parte dell’ex Impero ottomano) invece non ebbe mai la possibilità di pronunciarsi perché, non avendo già allora una propria rappresentanza politica o una propria tradizione nazionalistica, la sua opinione non contò nulla. Né mai conterà nulla negli anni e nei decenni seguenti.
Ancora oggi, il mondo palestinese - diviso tra gazawi e cisgiordani, in guerra tra loro ed entrambi tenuti sotto regimi dittatoriali - non ha alcuna possibilità di far sentire la propria voce. Ciò può sembrare insignificante a dei giovani cresciuti nel disprezzo «di sinistra» verso la democrazia propagandato dai loro cattivi maestri. Ma non dovrebbe essere così. Almeno a partire da questo nuovo giorno della Memoria si dovrebbe cominciare a considerare la conquista della democrazia come il primo e imprescindibile obiettivo politico da raggiungere, quali che siano la storia, l’economia o la religione di un popolo.
È una forma molto diffusa di razzismo (camuffato da terzomondismo) ritenere che i paesi islamici, a causa dell’arretratezza delle loro culture e soprattuto della loro religione, non abbiano diritto o bisogno di accedere alla democrazia. Ma a tale proposito, qualcosa per fortuna sta evolvendo in parte del mondo arabo. Non evolve, invece, nella «sinistra antiebraica» (e anche per questo reazionaria) che inneggia all’aggressione antisraeliana da parte dell’Iran e dei suoi proxies (agenti per procura) tutti ferocemente antidemocratici e religiosamente fanatici.
9. La Nakba (disastro, catastrofe) è una delle falsificazioni più grossolane che viene spesso citata per contestare l’esistenza legittima dello Stato d’Israele. La si dipinge falsamente come un’espulsione di circa 700.000 arabi palestinesi dal territorio d’Israele, mentre iniziò come guerra d’aggressione da parte di Stati arabi che di palestinese non avevano nulla, se non il desiderio di impadronirsi dei territori assegnati a Israele e al futuro Stato palestinese. Nakba fu in realtà la loro sconfitta militare.
I paesi che aggredirono Israele a maggio del 1948 - creando così un’epoca di conflitti mediorientali che dura ancor oggi - furono: Egitto, Transgiordania, Siria, Libano, Iraq, Esercito arabo di liberazione ed Esercito del sacro Jihād, raccolti nella Lega araba. Erano sicuri di vincere in poco tempo e di potersi spartire la regione palestinese, oltre a cancellare lo Stato d’Israele dalla faccia della terra. L’idea del genocidio antisraeliano (antiebraico) sorse in quel frangente. Ma per fortuna di chi ama la pace, da allora non è rimasto un solo Stato arabo che ancora lo proponga. Il genocidio antiebraico è rimasto solo nel programma della teocrazia iraniana e dei suoi proxies in Libano e a Gaza, oltre che in grandi settori del movimento proPal.
I paesi aggressori del 1948 erano non palestinesi (lo ripeto) e non avevano alcuna intenzione di dar vita a uno Stato palestinese. Prova ne sia il fatto che i palestinesi.doc furono esclusi dalla direzione militare, non ebbero un proprio esercito e non ebbero un progetto politico di governo provvisorio. Gli aggressori miravano ad annettersi territori. E purtroppo, con l’armistizio che si firmò dopo la loro sconfitta, alcuni di questi territori riuscirono ad averli ugualmente, come Gaza, la futura Cisgiordania, le alture del Golan, parte di Gerusalemme.
Per il mondo islamico la falsificazione della Nakba è diventata un atto di fede e difficilmente si riuscirà a convincere i giovani palestinesi - cisgiordani e gazawi - che le cose siano andate diversamente. Ma i giovani «occidentali» che manifestano spinti da sentimenti genuini per il tragico destino del popolo gazawi, hanno tutte le possibilità di documentarsi e stabilire come siano andate veramente le cose. Nel giorno della Memoria l’idea di mettersi a studiare seriamente la questione potrebbe essere uno dei buoni propositi da formulare.
Anche perché, dopo aver capito cosa accadde veramente nel 1947-48, si avrà qualche possibilità in più di capire quello che accadde dopo e sta ancora accadendo. Io posso solo dire che come il Patto Hitler-Stalin rappresenta il vero spartiacque della Storia moderna, così l’aggressione araba non palestinese del 1948 rappresenta lo spartiacque della storia mediorientale. Ci si cominci a chiedere anche perché nessuno dei paesi aggressori antiebraici di allora continui ad esserlo oggigiorno, mentre l’attuale aggressività antisraeliana e antiebraica è tutta di provenienza iraniana (compresi Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthi ecc.)
10. La Guerra dei sei giorni. Può essere un buon esempio per i giovani caduti in errore, perché mi tocca personalmente. Nel giugno 1967 avevo ancora vent’anni e una grande passione per la causa dei popoli. Ero anche membro della Quarta internazionale, all’interno della quale, sulla guerra che aveva visto la sconfitta lampo di Egitto, Siria e Giordania, stava trionfando la propaganda sovietica secondo cui era Isaele ad aver aggredito i tre Stati arabi. E invece era stata una guerra preventiva, quindi difensiva, verso l’aggressione che preparavano i tre Stati arabi. Questa falsa propaganda fu comune a tutta la sinistra di allora, compresi i partiti comunisti e la Quarta internazionale.
Giovane e fiducioso nei miei maestri politici, fui vittima a mia volta di questa spiegazione falsa e continuai ad esserlo per vari anni. Quando capii il grave errore compiuto, però, smisi di continuarlo, approfondii l’argomento, leggendo e studiando. Insomma, quando capii di non aver ragione, mi lasciai convincere, non più dai cattivi maestri della Quarta (che per inciso continuano ad essere sostenitori di Hamas e dei suoi propositi genocidi), ma dallo studio della storia.
Porto il mio esempio, di sbaglio grossolano compiuto, per dire che si può cambiare idea, si possono riconoscere gli errori compiuti e magari essere grati a chi tali errori ha corretto.
11. I giovani proPal che hanno inneggiato ad Hamas, che ne siano consapevoli o no, hanno anche inneggiato ai suoi propositi genocidi. Lo sterminio del popolio ebraico israeliano è scritto nel programma di Hamas e, se ci fossero dei dubbi al riguardo, Hamas ha tentato di iniziare a metterlo in pratica il 7 ottobre 2023. Lo sterminio degli abitanti di alcuni kibbutzim e delle centinaia di giovani che partecipavano a un rave, non aveva un fine politico preciso, ma doveva rispondere all’obiettivo religioso di una parte del fondamentalismo islamico, consistente nello sterminare il più possibile di ebrei d’Israele (ma per gli ayatollah iraniani anche degli ebrei del resto del mondo).
Il modo in cui i giovani ebrei furono massacrati (stupri, squartamenti, roghi) non furono eccessi di alcuni individui psicopatici, ma erano le istruzioni date dal comando di Hamas: incutere il maggior terrore possibile.
Orrori dell’Inquisizione? del nazismo? dei pogrom dei Centoneri? I precedenti di efferata crudeltà da parte dell’antiebraismo storico non mancano, purtroppo. E il giovane proPal, cui i cattivi maestri hanno detto che quella è invece una forma di Resistenza, di lotta di liberazione nazionale, avrebbe qui un’occasione preziosa per ricredersi, per provare orrore nei riguardi degli slogan lanciati e delle manifestazioni antisraeliane alle quali ha partecipato. Il Giorno della Memoria potrebbe essere un’occasione per farlo.
12. Il futuro dell’umanità è tutto dei paesi in cui regna la democrazia, la ricerca del progresso scientifico e culturale. Le dittature, prima o poi, sono tutte condannate a scomparire. E il futuro è anche di quei settori del mondo arabo che sono in piena evoluzione, nonché della gioventù amante della pace, del progresso, della cultura nel mondo intero.
Hamas scomparirà prima o poi, come sono scomparsi vari gruppi terroristici islamici e antiebraici del passato. E anche il regime degli ayatollah dovrà scomparire prima o poi perché la sua esistenza, oltre ad essere odiata dalla maggioranza del popolo, è incompatibile con lo sviluppo del capitalismo.
Ma scompariranno anche le organizzazioni e i gruppi politici che hanno fatto propria la nuova accusa di sangue antiebraica (il presunto «genocidio»), come sono scomparse prima di loro le organizzazioni nazifasciste o i partiti che avevano inneggiato all’invasione dell’Ungheria, della Cecoslovacchia, dell’Afghanistan ecc.
È tutto un mondo dell’anticapitalismo precapitalistico che in gran parte è scomparso ed è comunque destinato a scomparire là dove sopravvive. L’antisemitismo/antiebraismo - comunque mascherato - è parte di questo spirito antioccidentalistico che porta a disprezzare le grandi conquiste morali e culturali dell’umanità, la democrazia in primo luogo e come loro precondizione.
I giovani che hanno inneggiato ai propositi genocidi di Hamas e alla sua efferatezza dovranno prima o poi pentirsi di averlo fatto. Forse quando Hamas non ci sarà più, ma si spera anche prima. Questa lettera vorrebbe aiutare a farlo, approfittando della pausa di riflessione resa possibile da questa controversa Giornata della Memoria.

Unknown young pro-Pal activists, I am writing you this letter without knowing if it will ever reach you or anyone of your generation.
I am well aware that the dominant principle of conduct among you digital natives is that "the important thing is not to be right, but not to be convinced." Yet I also know that you are intellectually defenseless, disarmed in the face of trends induced by social media, and thus ready to be convinced by the many fake-news circulating, provided they have a mass character, even if only virtual. Nevertheless, if even one young man or one young woman in the world finds in this Memorandum of mine the stimulus to review their anti-Jewish positions and thus orient their future moral and intellectual life differently, it will have been worth my while to have dedicated part of my time to you. This will not be enough to include me among the Righteous among the nations, but it will strengthen my faith that with rational arguments and the appropriate historical references it is still possible to convince sincere young people.
I decided to write to you because – after the passion with which, in Italy and other parts of the Western world, you took to the streets to demonstrate against Israel, overcome with emotion for the massacres of the Gazan people – I have seen nothing similar for the recent massacres of Iranian citizens. And yet it was one of the greatest crimes against humanity of the modern era, of which you happened to be contemporaries: a theocratic government driven by religious fanaticism that fired with machine guns, killing thousands and thousands of demonstrators, mostly young people, willing to die for democracy and progress.
Perhaps it also weighed that those who had mobilized you against Israel took good care not to tell you that many of these young victims belonged to leftist groups such as the People's Mujaheddin, the People's Fedayeen, the Tudeh Party (communists, underground since 1988, but not since 1979), other secular and democratic associations. In short: progress against barbarism. And for this reason too, Trump did not intervene to help.
No emotion on your part, not even a sense of generational solidarity, since it would be difficult to speak of a shared love for democracy, after the moral support you have given to the anti-Jewish aggressions of other religious fanaticisms like Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iran itself.
For religious reasons, this letter of mine will hardly be useful to those among you who are Muslims, young, but still raised with respect for Quranic theology. Over time, this theology has become unilaterally anti-Jewish, unlike the Quran which partly praised the Jews excessively and partly condemned them, foreseeing their punishment in the fire of Gehenna: but not in the 21st century, rather at the End of Times.
And yet you, young Muslim, in theory grew up reciting daily or ritually the concluding (7th) verse of the first Quranic Surah (al-Fātiḥa, the Opener). It is an imprecation addressed to Allah against "those who have earned [Your] wrath, those who have gone astray." For you, young Muslim, the verse is almost incomprehensible, but for traditional Islamic interpretation, the first would be the Jews and the second the Christians. And the trouble is that it cannot be otherwise, given the explanations provided in the 2nd Surah (al-Baqara), before and after verse 142.
For reasons much more complicated to explain (but some of you might even dig into my previous books to find the necessary references), this letter is not addressed to those who have practiced antisemitism (which I prefer to call anti-Judaism) since before the Gaza war: Christians and Catholics for almost two thousand years, Islamic fundamentalists for several centuries, various Nazi-fascists for about a century (including former Croatian Ustaše, Hungarian Arrow Cross, Slovak Hlinka Guards, etc.), negationists, Stalinists, Slavophile currents, and fundamentalists of various kinds.
Nor is it addressed to those who have accompanied you physically or morally in your anti-Israeli demonstrations (often even convening and directing them), belonging to sectarian and strongly ideological groups, of Hitlerite-Communistoid, Trotskyite, Anarchoid, apocalyptic environmentalist, Woke, anti-European, and anti-Westernist origin in general.
Unlike you, who mobilized moved by emotion for the civilians of Gaza, the members of these sects – sometimes capable of reaching the dimensions of a political group – are not recoverable to a rational and civil discourse. Their presumed ideological certainties mask the profound character insecurity of their members, which drives them to seek protective father figures and possibilities to exalt their narcissistic Ego within their narrow circles of belonging. In the anti-Israeli demonstrations, their psychological instability found the precious opportunity to vent the sadomasochistic undercurrent that underlies racism in general, but anti-Judaism in particular.
I hope this is not your case, or at least not in a chronic, incurable form. I therefore invite you to overcome the state of youthful unconsciousness, while you are still in time, also hoping you have the chance to read this letter of mine.
I will not attempt here to reconstruct the entire discourse on the birth of the State of Israel, the continuous and extra-Palestinian aggressions since 1948, the inconsistency of the Two-State theory, the Soviet invention of Palestinian nationalism, the shameless anti-Judaism of those who invented and then propagated the new "blood libel," that is, the "genocide," and all the rest.
If you wish to delve deeper, you will find all this expanded and documented in a recent book of mine (Deliri del nuovo antiebraismo. Accuse di sangue, mode e disinformazione [Frenzies of the new anti-Judaism. Blood libels, fads and misinformation]) as well as in more recent articles on Utopia Rossa. Here I will schematically recall only some significant points, assuming you are unaware of them. This will not be true for all of you and not true for all points of the Memorandum; but perhaps even those who already know them will benefit from being reminded of them on the Day of Remembrance.
MEMORANDUM
- The Third Reich officially took power on January 30, 1933. The first foreign state to recognize it was the Vatican and, despite its explicitly anti-Jewish program, on July 20, 1933, Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli (future Pius XII) rushed to draft and sign, on behalf of Pius XI, the Reichskonkordat – the Concordat with Nazism – modeled on the one drawn up with Italian Fascism by Francesco Pacelli (brother of Eugenio). It is generally ignored that that Konkordat is still in force.
- Pius XII – a pope grown politically and culturally together with German Nazism – never used the term "Jews" in public instances, let alone "antisemitism." The legend of his interest in saving the lives of some Italian Jews was built on a gross falsification (e.g., by Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio). The truth is that the Vatican was always and only interested in converted Jews or spouses in mixed marriages. But even in this regard, it is ignored that the formula "converted Jews" was never used, but rather the racist formula of "Aryan Catholics."The documentation is full of it, including that made accessible in recent times, after many years of secrecy.
- It is excellent that the Second Vatican Council abolished in 1965 the accusation of "deicide" for the Jewish people. But this means that for a full twenty years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the Vatican continued to keep alive the accusation from which anti-Judaism had originally started about two millennia before, and this despite Auschwitz. Moreover, Pius XII (†1958) never condemned the Holocaust, not even after the war ended, proving to have a sort of psychological block even just pronouncing the word "Jews" in public.
The traces left in the Catholic world by almost two thousand years of anti-Judaism have not completely disappeared and periodically resurface, both in the most recent books justifying Pius XII's antisemitism, and in serious declarations, like that of Pope Francis on the possible ongoing genocide in Gaza.
- The first half of the twentieth century saw the construction and spread of camps both in the USSR (Gulag) and in Nazi Germany. The first Konzentrationslager were born immediately after the seizure of power or in any case in the 1930s and remained active for different durations. Initially, they were not used for Jews, or at least not only for Jews: Breitenau, Buchenwald, Dachau, Flossenbürg, Neuengamme, Oranienburg, Osthofen, Sachsenhausen... Names that evoke great human tragedies, but which did not move Stalin and the Soviet leadership in the slightest when they decided to ally with Hitler in August 1939. The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact – which young people should begin to consider the true watershed of modern history – was signed while the persecution of German Jews had already taken on mass proportions.
But without that alliance, without the common Nazi-Soviet decision to partition Poland, almost 3 million Polish Jews would not have died, exterminated mostly through mass shootings and only partly in camps. In fact, the Second World War would not have broken out either: but that is another discussion on which there are excellent books by valiant historians (Claudia Weber perhaps the best and good to start with).
- The alliance between Hitler and Stalin lasted from August 1939 to June 22, 1941 (the Nazi aggression known as "Operation Barbarossa"). In those 22 months, the plan for anti-Jewish extermination – the so-called "Final Solution" – was launched, but it was formalized (i.e., made official) at the Wannsee Conference in January 1942. The extermination camps that were created in Poland and elsewhere during the Nazi-Soviet alliance period have the sadly famous names of Auschwitz and Mauthausen.
Other extermination camps, whose construction began during the alliance with the USSR but were completed shortly after the aggression, have equally sadly famous names like Bełżec, Chełmno, Lviv, Majdanek, Maly Trostenets, Sobibór, Treblinka. For this reason, when young people are invited to demonstrate against Israel by organizations that I define as "Hitlerite-Communist" – because they have never renounced that alliance which caused so many millions of deaths to the Jewish people and the world – they should ask themselves with what moral, historical, or political right they do so.
- It is well-known history that Stalin took violent anti-Jewish (and not just anti-Zionist) measures in the last years of his life. Less known, however, is that after the end of the war, of the approximately 2.5 million Soviet Jews who died during the conflict, it was officially decided not to speak of them as Jews, but to include them in the more general number of Soviet citizens who died in the war. The publication of the Black Book (which documented the figures of the Jewish extermination in Soviet territories and which would only appear in 1993) was blocked in 1947, and the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (Eak, which had helped so much in the anti-Nazi struggle), Jewish cultural and publishing centers were dismantled.
The Shoah was eliminated from Soviet culture and literature, and the leaders of the Eak were arrested, tortured, and then eliminated between 1948 and 1952. 15 defendants and 13 death sentences. Only one of the three women tried was sentenced to prison and not killed (Lina Štern), and the case of Solomon Bregman, who suffered a collapse and died in prison in January 1953, was treated separately. Names like Solomon Michoėls, Solomon Lozovsky, Isaak Fefer, Boris Šimeliovič, Perets Markiš, Veniamin Zuskin, Ilya Vatenberg, Emilia Teumin, Chayka Vatenberg-Ostrovskaya, and various others, should be recalled to the leaders of organizations once pro-Soviet and today pro-Putin, when they call demonstrations against Israel. The history of "left-wing" anti-Judaism does not begin today and has a gloomy past behind it. (For further reading: Antonella Salomoni, L'Unione Sovietica e la Shoah, Il Mulino 2007).
- When Resolution No. 181 was approved on November 29, 1947 – to make possible the creation of three political entities (Israel, an Arab Palestinian state, and the city of Jerusalem) – the vote was by a large majority: 33 in favor (including the USSR, its satellite countries, and almost all of Latin America), 10 abstentions, and 13 against (all Islamic countries, except Cuba, Greece, and the particular case of India).
Well, since the beginning of the Gaza war, various bad teachers have emerged who wanted to make young people believe that the decision was based on a recognition of a presumed Israelite continuity with the Bible. Ridiculous explanation, because one would have to imagine the leaders of the main capitalist, imperialist, or Soviet countries, gathered in solemn assembly in New York, being moved thinking about the stories of the Old Testament. For this purpose, Shlomo Sand's book (The Invention of the Jewish People, 2009) has been cited polemically but without real basis, of which the title is cited but the content ignored. I have had occasion to say, in fact, that the book should have been titled "The Invention of the Jewish Race" (which indeed never existed), while it represents one of the most complete reconstructions of the historical existence of a veritable Jewish people, even if in certain eras located between North Africa, Spain, the Caucasus, the Tsarist Empire, etc. But precisely because of this dispersion, even more worthy of investigation and consideration.
It is obvious that the bad teachers, in ridiculing the 1947 UN decision, are driven by an anti-Jewish spirit and hatred. All the more reason to distance oneself from them and read that and other books.
- Israel accepted and continued to accept for a long time the part of the Resolution that provided for the birth also of a Palestinian state, while the Arab and Islamic states rejected it. The poor Arab Palestinian people (i.e., the inhabitants of Palestine under British Mandate, part of the former Ottoman Empire) however never had the possibility to pronounce themselves because, not having at that time their own political representation or a nationalistic tradition, their opinion counted for nothing. Nor would it ever count for anything in the following years and decades.
Even today, the Palestinian world – divided between Gazans and West Bankers, at war with each other and both kept under dictatorial regimes – has no possibility of making its voice heard. This may seem insignificant to young people raised in the "leftist" contempt for democracy propagated by their bad teachers. But it should not be so. At least starting from this new Day of Remembrance, one should begin to consider the conquest of democracy as the first and indispensable political objective to be achieved, whatever the history, economy, or religion of a people.
It is a very widespread form of racism (disguised as Third-Worldism) to believe that Islamic countries, due to the backwardness of their cultures and especially their religion, do not have the right or need to access democracy. But in this regard, something is fortunately evolving in part of the Arab world. It does not evolve, however, in the "anti-Jewish left" (and therefore also reactionary) that cheers the anti-Israeli aggression by Iran and its proxies (agents by proxy), all fiercely anti-democratic and religiously fanatical.
- The Nakba (disaster, catastrophe) is one of the most gross falsifications often cited to challenge the legitimate existence of the State of Israel. It is falsely depicted as an expulsion of about 700,000 Palestinian Arabs from the territory of Israel, while it began as a war of aggression by Arab states that had nothing Palestinian about them, except the desire to seize the territories assigned to Israel and the future Palestinian state. Nakba was in reality their military defeat.
The countries that attacked Israel in May 1948 – thus creating an era of Middle Eastern conflicts that still lasts today – were: Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, the Arab Liberation Army, and the Army of the Holy Jihād, gathered in the Arab League. They were sure of winning quickly and being able to partition the Palestinian region, in addition to wiping the State of Israel off the face of the earth. The idea of anti-Israeli (anti-Jewish) genocide arose at that juncture. But fortunately for those who love peace, not a single Arab state from that time still proposes it today. Anti-Jewish genocide has remained only in the program of the Iranian theocracy and its proxies in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as in large sectors of the pro-Pal movement.
The aggressor countries of 1948 were non-Palestinian (I repeat) and had no intention of giving life to a Palestinian state. Proof is the fact that the Palestinians were excluded from military direction, did not have their own army, and did not have a political project for a provisional government. The aggressors aimed to annex territories. And unfortunately, with the armistice signed after their defeat, some of these territories they managed to get anyway, like Gaza, the future West Bank, the Golan Heights, part of Jerusalem.
For the Islamic world, the falsification of the Nakba has become an act of faith, and it will be difficult to convince young Palestinians – West Bankers and Gazans – that things went differently. But the "Western" young people who demonstrate driven by genuine feelings for the tragic fate of the Gazan people have every opportunity to document themselves and establish how things really went. On the Day of Remembrance, the idea of starting to seriously study the issue could be one of the good resolutions to formulate.
Also because, after understanding what really happened in 1947-48, one will have a better chance of understanding what happened afterwards and is still happening. I can only say that as the Hitler-Stalin Pact represents the true watershed of Modern History, so the non-Palestinian Arab aggression of 1948 represents the watershed of Middle Eastern history. One should also begin to ask why none of the anti-Jewish aggressor countries of that time continues to be so today, while the current anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish aggressiveness is all of Iranian origin (including Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, etc.)
- The Six-Day War. It can be a good example for young people who have fallen into error, because it touches me personally. In June 1967 I was still twenty years old and had a great passion for the cause of peoples. I was also a member of the Fourth International, within which, regarding the war that had seen the lightning defeat of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, Soviet propaganda was triumphing according to which it was Israel that had attacked the three Arab states. And instead it was a preventive, therefore defensive, war against the aggression that the three Arab states were preparing. This false propaganda was common to the entire left of the time, including communist parties and the Fourth International.
Young and trusting in my political teachers, I was in turn a victim of this false explanation and continued to be so for several years. When I understood the serious error committed, however, I stopped continuing it, delved into the subject, reading and studying. In short, when I realized I was wrong, I let myself be convinced, no longer by the bad teachers of the Fourth (who, incidentally, continue to be supporters of Hamas and its genocidal aims), but by the study of history.
I bring my example, of a gross mistake made, to say that one can change their mind, one can recognize the errors made, and perhaps be grateful to those who corrected such errors.
- The young pro-Pal activists who have cheered for Hamas, whether they are aware of it or not, have also cheered for its genocidal aims. The extermination of the Israeli Jewish people is written in Hamas's program, and if there were any doubts about it, Hamas attempted to begin putting it into practice on October 7, 2023. The extermination of the inhabitants of some kibbutzim and of the hundreds of young people participating in a rave did not have a precise political purpose, but was meant to respond to the religious objective of a part of Islamic fundamentalism, consisting of exterminating as many Jews of Israel as possible (but for the Iranian ayatollahs, also Jews from the rest of the world).
The way in which the young Jews were massacred (rapes, dismemberments, burnings) were not excesses by some psychopathic individuals, but were the instructions given by the Hamas command: to instill the greatest possible terror.
Horrors of the Inquisition? of Nazism? of the Black Hundreds pogroms? Precedents of atrocious cruelty by historical anti-Judaism are not lacking, unfortunately. And the young pro-Pal activist, to whom the bad teachers have said that this is instead a form of Resistance, of national liberation struggle, would have here a precious opportunity to reconsider, to feel horror for the slogans chanted and the anti-Israeli demonstrations in which they participated. The Day of Remembrance could be an occasion to do so.
- The future of humanity belongs entirely to the countries where democracy reigns, the pursuit of scientific and cultural progress. Dictatorships, sooner or later, are all condemned to disappear. And the future also belongs to those sectors of the Arab world that are in full evolution, as well as to the youth who love peace, progress, and culture throughout the entire world.
Hamas will disappear sooner or later, as various Islamic and anti-Jewish terrorist groups of the past have disappeared. And also the regime of the ayatollahs will have to disappear sooner or later because its existence, besides being hated by the majority of the people, is incompatible with the development of capitalism.
But the organizations and political groups that have made their own the new anti-Jewish blood libel (the alleged "genocide") will also disappear, as before them the Nazi-fascist organizations or the parties that cheered the invasion of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, etc., have disappeared.
It is an entire world of precapitalist anticapitalism that has largely disappeared and is in any case destined to disappear where it survives. Antisemitism/anti-Judaism – however masked – is part of this anti-Westernist spirit that leads to despising the great moral and cultural conquests of humanity, democracy first and foremost and as their precondition.
The young people who have cheered for the genocidal aims of Hamas and its brutality will sooner or later have to repent for having done so. Perhaps when Hamas is no more, but hopefully even sooner. This letter would like to help in doing so, taking advantage of the pause for reflection made possible by this controversial Day of Remembrance.
