The current work by David I. Kertzer The Pope at War, just published, not yet translated into German, and its predecessor The Pope and Mussoliniconfirm Karlheinz Deschner's basic work God and the Fascistsand is its perfect up-date and complement. Deschner is already available in Italian, Russian and even Mongolian language.

Pius XII was an opportunist who only defended the Jews - whom he usually referred to as non-Aryans - if they were baptized, that is, Catholic. We find many new sources in Kertzer’s work, especially on the deportation of the Jews in the immediate vicinity of the Vatican in October 1943. Of course he could have used his influence, e.g. on German Catholics, to mitigate the excesses of the Final Solution if he had only wanted to (just as the German episcopate could safely stop the Nazi euthanasia program!).

He would have had to take a certain risk, maybe even leave Rome temporarily. In Slovakia he could even have stopped the Holocaust completely, because the President there, Jozef Tiso, was a Catholic priest, acted on his own responsibility - without pressure from the Nazis - and, according to Yeshayahu Jelinek, personally supervised the evacuation of the Jews in several cases. As Pope, Pacelli had authority over him!
An opportunist, Pacelli long hoped for Nazi victory, for Bolshevism was a common enemy. When Hitler's fortunes in the war slowly but surely tipped over in 1942, he maneuvered around and began to change sides, hoping for a common Eastern front for the Allies with Germany against the Soviet Union.

Not everything that Kertzer says is really new, most of it can already be found in Deschner, but the sources that Kertzer uses are really interesting, insightful and worth reading. It is a pity that Deschner is not mentioned in his bibliography. The anti-Semitism of the Catholic church, beaten into the minds of the faithful by the clergy over the centuries, was at any rate the ideological basis of the Holocaust, and Kertzer leaves no doubt about that.

Anyone who wants to understand the mythological reasons of Christian anti-Judaism - which neither David Kertzer nor Karlheinz Deschner goes into - will find them in Hyam Maccoby, by the way, of whom six volumes have already been published in German translation, three in Italian at Massari Editore Publishing House.

Kertzer, Deschner, Maccoby: a must for every school, for every history lesson, not just in Germany.

Das aktuelle Werk von David I. Kertzer The Pope at War, gerade erschienen, noch nicht ins Deutsche übersetzt, und dessen Vorgänger The Pope and Mussolini bestätigen Karlheinz Deschners Grundlagenwerk Mit Gott und den Faschisten und sind dessen perfekte, aktuelle Ergänzung. Deschner ist bereits in den USA, Russland, in der Mongolei und bei Massari Editore in Italien erschienen.
Pius XII war ein Opportunist, der die Juden - die er in der Regel als Nicht-Arier bezeichnete - nur in Schutz nahm, wenn sie getauft, also katholisch waren. Bei Kertzer finden wir viele neue Quellen, insbesondere zum Abtransport der Juden in unmittelbarer Nähe des Vatikans im Oktober 1943. Natürlich hätte er seinen Einfluss, z.B. auf deutsche Katholiken, nutzen können, um die Exzesse der Endlösung zu mildern, wenn er das nur gewollt hätte (genauso, wie der deutsche Episkopat das Euthanasie-Programm der Nazis gefahrlos stoppen konnte!).
Dabei hätte er ein gewisses Risiko eingehen müssen, vielleicht sogar Rom temporär verlassen müssen. In der Slowakei hätte er den Holocaust sogar komplett stoppen können, denn der dortige Präsident Jozef Tiso war katholischer Priester, handelte auf eigene Verantwortung - ohne Druck von Seiten der Nazis - und überwachte den Abtransport der Juden laut Yeshayahu Jelinek teils persönlich. Als Papst war Pacelli ihm gegenüber weisungsbefugt!
Als Opportunist hoffte Pacelli lange auf den Sieg der Nazis, denn der Bolschewismus war ein gemeinsamer Feind. Als Hitlers Kriegsglück 1942 langsam aber sicher kippte, lavierte er herum und begann die Seiten zu wechseln, hoffte auf eine gemeinsame Ostfront der Alliierten mit Deutschland gegen die Sowjetunion.
Nicht alles, was Kertzer sagt ist wirklich neu, das meiste findet man bereits bei Deschner, aber die Quellen, die Kertzer nutzt, sind wirklich interessant, aufschlussreich und lesenswert. Schade, dass Deschner in seiner Bibliographie nicht erwähnt wird. Der Antisemitismus der Catholica, über die Jahrhunderte durch den Klerus in die Köpfe der Gläubigen geprügelt, war jedenfalls die ideologische Grundlage des Holocaust, daran lässt auch Kertzer keinen Zweifel.
Wer die mythologischen (Ab-)Gründe des christlichen Antijudaismus begreifen möchte – auf die weder David Kertzer noch Karlheinz Deschner eingehen - der findet sie übrigens bei Hyam Maccoby, von dem bereits sechs Bände in deutscher Übersetzung erschienen sind und drei in Italienisch bei Massari Editore.
Kertzer, Deschner, Maccoby: ein muss für jede Schule, für jeden Geschichtsunterricht, nicht nur in der Bundesrepublik.
