It is before our eyes but we do not want to acknowledge it .
The fact is our future generations are on the brink of extinction .
If the truth lies with indications from , the most authoritative scientists , and thousands of publications on the subject , all telling us that the human species is coming to the end of its days , then apparently nothing significant appears to be happening .
It would be enough to reflect on our own irresponsible behaviour , which from the industrial revolution onwards has put our very existence at stake as well as all other forms of life on this Earth . Society along with components of the political , financial and mediatic spheres seem orientated towards occulting facts which owing to their magnitude should persuade us to radically embrace a change of direction .
Faced with global warming and climate change , mankind should provide itself with new means of preserving those conditions which have made life possible on this small and lost among the galaxies , planet Earth .
In order to do this, to leave "The Great Derangement “in the words of Amitar Gosh , we need a new dimension , a change of prospective and scale , a vision of ourselves from a distance . Above all we need a strong imagination capable of guiding the choices of individuals and collectives alike .
With this spirit three artists, Marsha Chatman,Catherine Keogh and Margherita Tattichi have recently exhibited their works on the theme of climate change.
The show was presented at Torre Colombaia at the beginning of May and will remain open to visitors until the end of the Summer season.The location is just outside the village of San Biagio della Valle, along the route connecting Perugia and Marsciano
Here at Torre Colombaia Alfredo Fasola continues to dedicate his lifetime ' s work to producing quality food from sustainable agriculture in total respect of the land he toils.
Trees such as those found here in the ancient woods framing the fields inspired the paintings of Catherine Keogh.
Our existence is dependent on plants and only in their company can we continue to exist.
" My thoughts on climate change - writes Catherine Keogh - mainly regards the unity and disunity of living things on this Earth .
I believe the planet is changing due to our failure to live in harmony with it .
In these works I have used as a metaphor , a tree.
In the painting ( We Reap What We Sow), we see the left side of the tree blooming and growing while the right side of it is stifled and dying .
The colourful swirls represent spirituality .
Two further paintings express the vitality and harmony of nature (Unity) and the absence of them (Disunity) .
The planet is transforming rapidly and bending itself to our needs . Instead of living in harmony with the Earth we are enslaving it .
Working in harmony with mother nature results in vibrant energy while the contrary results in stagnation , uniformity and ultimately destruction “.
The planet Earth viewed from the Moon is the painting proposed by Marsha Chatman.
Fifty years have passed since the Apollo mission, the first ever to take a manned spacecraft into orbit around the Moon.
One photograph (Earthrise 1968-The rising of the Earth above the Moon ) would soon become an icon of the history of humanity: it changed our vision of the Earth forever.
"That vivid sphere in the darkness of the Universe , with its green vegetation , white clouds and blue seas is an image likely to disappear " writes Marsha Chatman.
"Without its unique ecosystem the Earth would resemble Mars or Venus : a sad- rock , like ball.
Earth is not an option,it is our home, There is nowhere else where we can live in the entire Universe.
Those who disregard the rules which govern the community of the living are putting the survival of our habitat and humanity at risk “.
The Meadows Report of 1972 on The Limits of Growth foresaw that the economic model based on continuous growth would inevitably collapse owing to the limited capacity of the planet to absorb all the pollution emitted.
After forty seven years those premonitions have become reality.
Margherita Taticchi is an eclectic artist from Umbria who has produced a number of works on climate change and it's effect on landscape and nature .
Here with her work In-qui-NO (Not In Here),reminds us that the spending of every resource which is not renewable for future generations will bring tragic consequences.
She writes,
"I want to fight my senses obscured by weak flames of pretence,boycott the darker side of me in order to love the earth and not harm it .I want to oppose all silent indifference and cross over the line which separates foulness from respect towards nature .Starting from today”.

Artists for the Environment

So is the need to put abrake on the effects of man’s life style and his excesses in general. The sceptics become ever fewereven though they have the power and ability to influence the idle who hardly change their way of life at all.Those who, on the other hand, are convinced that it is necessary to act quickly, may not be certainwhat to do: the advice given by different experts may sometimes be conflicting and difficult torespect .The agricultural enterprise Torre Colombaia, near Perugia which has been dedicated to organic farming for more than thirty years,has now turned to an original inducement to act by entrusting some artists with achallenging project. In the farm's woodland restaurant is an exhibition in which three women’s works centredon the protection of nature, underline the way in which the polysemous aspects of art and itsreading can raise awareness, leading to appropriate action. Presenting the exhibition wasMaurizio Fratta, who has for many years devoted himself to activities directed to the saving of theplanet.Interestingly, most of the visitors to the exhibition, who come from all over the world, are women,and all three artists are women from different countries: Catherine Keogh from Northern Ireland,Marsha Chatman from Wales and Margherita Taticchi from Italy. Perhaps the explanation lies in themore caring nature of women. If their works, highly regarded, tend to be over-didactic, this can beattributed to the fact that they come in the very early stages of the thematic development. With ecofriendlytechniques – use of acrylic and water, gesso priming and recovered materials - the artistshave offered refined artefacts that reveal a love of the Creation, an awareness of the need to protect itand a denunciation of its abuse .
Clima a misura d ‘ arte

E’ sotto i nostri occhi ma non lo vogliamo vedere .Tutt ‘al più ne banalizziamo la portata .Eppure il cambiamento climatico bussa con sempre maggiore forza alla nostra porta e l ‘umanitàsi deve misurare per la prima volta con una possibile e sempre più probabile estinzione di specie .Se è vero che una gran mole di studi e che i più autorevoli scienziati ci dicono che abbiamo i giorni contati , nulla di significativo sembra accadere .Basterebbe riflettere sui folli comportamenti che , a partire dalla rivoluzione industriale , abbiamo messo in atto e che oggi compromettono la nostra esistenza e quella della grande maggioranza degli esseri senzienti .Ma la società , la politica , l ‘economia , l ‘informazione sembrano invece sostanzialmente orientatead occultare un fatto che nella sua gravità dovrebbe indurci ad un radicale cambiamento di direzione di marcia .Dovremmo dotarci di una nuova consapevolezza per mettere al riparo le condizioni che hanno reso possibile la vita sul piccolo e , sperduto tra le galassie , pianeta Terra .Per farlo , per uscire da quella che il grande scrittore indiano Amitar Ghosh ha chiamato la Grande Cecità , abbiamo bisogno di una nuova dimensione , di un mutamento di prospettiva e di scala , di guardarci da lontano .E soprattutto di una potente immaginazione che sia di orientamento per le scelte individuali e per le decisioni collettive .Con questo spirito tre artiste , Marsha Chatman , Catherine Keogh e Margherita Taticchi , hanno dato vita ad un ‘esposizione di loro opere dedicate al tema del cambiamento climatico .La mostra , visibile per tutta la stagione estiva , è stata inaugurata nei primi giorni di maggio a Torre Colombaia , appena fuori dal borgo di San Biagio della Valle , sulla via che collega Perugia a Marsciano .Qui , a Torre Colombaia , Alfredo Fasola continua a dedicare la sua esistenza all’ agricoltura diqualità , alla sostenibilità della produzione alimentare , al rispetto per il territorio dove opera .Ed agli alberi , come quelli del bosco secolare che fanno da cornice ai campi , si è ispirata la pittrice irlandese Catherine Keogh .« I miei pensieri sul cambiamento climatico – ci dice – riguardano soprattutto l ‘ unità e la disgregazione della vita sulla Terra .Credo che il pianeta stia cambiando a causa della nostra incapacità a vivere in armonia con esso . Nelle mie opere – tecnica gypsum ed acrilico su tela – ho usato come metafora l ‘ albero .Nel primo dipinto del trittico esposto si vede l ‘albero in fiore mentre cresce , a destra lo stesso albero soffocato e morente .Il pianeta si sta trasformando rapidamente per piegarsi alle nostre esigenze .Invece di nutrire la Terra e vivere in armonia siamo in lotta con essa.Lavorare in armonia produce un ‘ energia vibrante mentre il contrario risulta stagnazione , uniformità e alla fine distruzione ».E la Terra vista dalla Luna è l ‘ immagine proposta da Marsha Chatman .Sono trascorsi cinquant’anni dalla missione Apollo , la prima a portare un equipaggio umano intorno alla Luna .Una foto ( Earthrise 1968 - L’alba della Terra vista dalla Luna ) , sarebbe diventata in breve una delle icone della storia dell’ umanità : mutò per sempre la nostra idea di Terra .« Quella sfera colorata nel buio dell’ Universo , verde per la vegetazione , bianca per le nuvole , blu per l ‘ acqua -ci dice la pittrice gallese che vive e lavora ad Assisi da tempo – è un ‘ immagineche rischia di sparire .Senza le piante la Terra assomiglierebbe molto a Marte o Venere : una triste palla di roccia .Il nostro habitat è in pericolo .In tutto l ‘ Universo non abbiamo un altro posto dove vivere .Gli uomini , che si considerano i padroni della Terra , dimostrano di ignorare totalmente le regole che governano la comunità dei viventi , mettendo ora a rischio la loro stessa sopravvivenza » .Nel 1972 il Rapporto sui limiti dello Sviluppo aveva previsto che il modello economico basato su una crescita continua era inevitabilmente destinato al collasso a causa della limitata capacità del pianeta di assorbire emissioni ed inquinamento .A 47 anni di distanza quelle previsioni coincidono con la realtà .Margherita Taticchi , la poliedrica artista umbra che al cambiamento prodotto dal tempo sul paesaggio e sulla natura ha dedicato molte delle sue opere , con la sua installazione in-qui-NOci ricorda che il consumo di qualsiasi risorsa non ricostituibile per le generazioni future dei viventi ha conseguenze tragiche .Ha scritto : « Voglio combattere i miei sensi offuscati dai fuochi fatui delle apparenze , boicottare i miei lati oscuri per amare la Terra e non calpestarla . Voglio combattere ogni silenziosaindifferenza , varcare la soglia che divide l ‘ inquinamento dal rispetto della natura .A partire da oggi ».Ricordando a noi tutti questo pensiero di Andy Warhol :« Credo che avere la Terra e non rovinarla più sia la più bella forma d ‘ arte che si possadesiderare » .
Artiste per l ‘ Ambiente
di Enrico Sciamanna( da micropolis )Che il Pianeta soffra e rischi un degrado preoccupante è ormai conclamato .Così come è necessario porre un freno agli effetti della antropizzazione e ai suoi eccessi in generale . Gli scettici sul tema sono sempre di meno , anche se potenti e capaci di influenzare i pigri che non modificano quasi affatto il loro stile di vita . Quelli che invece sono convinti che occorre agire in fretta,magari non sanno con certezza cosa fare : le indicazioni che provengono dai più informati talvolta appaiono discordanti e non facili da rispettare .A Torrecolombaia , sito di interesse comunitario non lontano da Perugia , in un ‘ azienda immersa in una foresta millenaria , votata da decenni al biologico , si è pensato di ricorrere ad un incentivo originalee tutt ‘ altro che peregrino , affidando ad alcune artiste la provocazione di un sussulto d ‘ impegno . Così nel ristorantedell ‘ azienda è in corso una mostra dove tre donne , dedite ad una produzione incentrata sulla protezione della natura , hanno esposto i loro lavori che in occasione della presentazione ( per altro ottimamente condotta da Maurizio Fratta che da anni è ormai votato ad attività che hanno come focus la salvaguardia del pianeta )hanno illustrato , sottolineando che l ‘ arte con il suo linguaggio polisemico e la lettura artistica possono svolgere un ruolo congruo per un contributo alla presa di coscienza e ad azioni conseguenti .Singolare che le astanti , provenienti letteralmente da tutte le parti del mondo , come d ‘ altronde le artiste , una nord irlandese , Catherine Keogh , una gallese , Marsha Chatman e l ‘ italiana Margherita Taticchi , fossero in maggioranza donne , anche se è facile spiegarlo con l ‘ inclinazione alla cura da parte del genere femminile .Se i loro lavori , apprezzati , hanno espresso , forse , eccessiva didascalicita’ , questo è imputabile al fatto che si è ai primordi per quanto attiene la tematica .Con tecniche realizzativeecocompatibili : colori acrilici ad acqua ,imprimiture di gesso , materiali di recupero , seppure , come si diceva , con un linguaggio ingenuo , le artiste hanno proposto manufatti eleganti e raffinati , che soffusamente indicavano l ‘ amore per il creato e la necessità urgente della sua protezione , insieme alla denuncia per le storture .
